By Anthony Lark, President, Phuket Hotels Association
A non-profit organization based on the island of Phuket, the Phuket Hotels Association endeavors to promote the island as a quality destination for international travelers from all walks of life. Through a series of core activities which include fundraising initiatives, scholarship opportunities and community-based environmental programs, the Association does its best to ensure that Phuket remains attractive to both tourists and its local inhabitants for years to come.
Currently, the Phuket Hotels Association is comprised of 75 member hotels which range from small boutique hotels to large international chains. As a definitive action-based plan which would ensure real results, in 2018 at the inaugural PHIST event, the Association’s member hotels signed a pledge with the promise of eradicating single-use plastic bottles from their properties. To date, 4.4 million plastic bottles have been saved and 1.6 million plastic straws have also been saved.
Further to the initial pledge at PHIST, during this year’s ‘Phuket Hotels for Islands Sustaining Tourism (PHIST) 2019’ event, the Phuket Hotels Association will launch a Sustainability Best Practices Guide. The guide is a collaboration of best practices the Association’s member hotels have implemented at property-level and showcases a wide variety of tried and true methods that have produced results in each individual hotel or resort.
It is the dream of the Phuket Hotels Association that the Sustainability Best Practices Guide will be used as an efficient learning tool for those seeking to make positive and long-lasting changes within their properties. The Guide is effective and is able to be adapted on both property-level and perhaps even in our daily lives.
